Gellu Naum s-a născut în 1915 şi a studiat filozofia la Bucureşti şi Paris. La sfârşitul anilor ’30 se afla în cercurile avangardei, în apropierea lui Andre Breton, alături de Victor Brauner şi Gherasim Luca. Se întoarce în 1940 în România, e mobilizat, dar trupul lui e imobilizat; rămâne în spital o vreme, într-o stare hipnotică.
În timpul dictaturii antonesciene duce o activitate literară clandestină, iar la sfârşitul războiului grupul său suprarealist se poate în fine exprima. Pentru scurt timp. Comunismul nu admite abaterile de la dogmă. Scrie cărţi pentru copii, traduce. Suprarealismul lui Gellu Naum nu-i o reţetă literară, ci un mod de-a fi. Scrie poezii, piese de teatru, un roman. Se retrage la Comana, unde timpul, spaţiul şi obiectele arată altfel. Când a murit, în 2001, cei care l-au cunoscut sau doar l-au citit şi-au dat seama că unul dintre cei mai mari scriitori pe care Romania i-a avut vreodată nu mai era printre ei.
