Ana Barca – The Wooden Architecture of Maramures

UnknownWood is an essential element of traditional architecture throughout Romania, where extensive and rich forest have permitted the development of construction in solid timber. Wooden architecture in Romania cannot be confused with that of other parts of Europe. It is characterised by the union of a few simple volumes and by techniques which bring out the qualities of the material. Complex harmonies emerge from the relationship between the whole structure and the details. The sculptural and pictorial qualities of the forms and ornaments are enriched by the interplay of light and shade. All the elements are combined with purpose and forethought in a sober architecture, in keeping with its natural environment.
